Functional principle
The functional principle of a gas spring based on a ballpoint pen mechanism is based on a hydropneumatic, self-contained, and maintenance-free system. The gas spring is filled with compressed nitrogen, which creates the spring force. This force is created by the internal pressure in the cylinder, which acts on the cross-sectional area of the piston rod. When no load is applied, the piston rod is always extended. When the piston rod is pushed in, the gas is compressed, which causes an increase in force (progression). This increased force depends on the diameter of the piston rod and the volume of the cylinder.
What is special about this gas spring is the mechanical locking in the retracted position. Similar to the mechanism of a ballpoint pen, the lock can be actuated by lightly pressing, after which the gas spring extends again by itself. Different end fittings and mounting brackets ensure optimal installation for the respective application.
